Sustainability
Nature is at the heart of the Heinola experience. From pristine lakes and forests to outdoor recreation and local services, sustainability plays an important role in preserving what makes the area special.

Sustainability tips
Below are some Finland-specific sustainability tips to help protect the environment.
Skip the water bottles
Finnish tap water is clean and safe to drink.
Return your bottles and cans
Glass and plastic bottles, as well as beverage cans, can be returned to recycling machines found in grocery stores. Most beverage prices include a deposit, which is refunded when the container is returned. Finns recycle more than 90% of bottles.
Rescue some food
Many restaurants and grocery stores use apps such as ResQ to sell surplus meals and soon-to-expire food at discounted prices.
Explore nature according to Everyone’s Rights
In Finland, Everyone’s Right allows everyone to enjoy nature responsibly, regardless of land ownership. Wild berries and mushrooms may be picked freely, but mosses and lichens are protected and should not be disturbed.
